At the age of just 10, Cate’s father sadly died of a heart attack, which meant she grew up with her mother, brother and sister.

She said in an interview with The herald that she had “no memory” of her childhood, which may have sprung from the trauma of losing her father.

She and her husband Andrew Upton met in 1996 while filming Gillian Armstrong’s adaptation of Peter Carey’s novel Oscar and Lucina.

She continued that she thought Andrew was “arrogant” when she first met him and he thought she was “distant”.
