Mothering Sunday in the UK has in recent times, taken on the name and personality of ‘Mothers Day’ from America. In the US Mothers Day is in May and doesn’t change months year to year like it does in the UK. This transition to ‘Mothers Day’ from ‘Mothering Sunday’ has however meant that the original meaning of Mothering Sunday has been somewhat lost in the UK. It is now quite common for Mothers Day gifts and cards to be given as it has taken on a more commercial spin, rather than meaningful sentiment.

Mothering Sunday is has been known to be referred to as ‘Refreshment Sunday’ due to the fasting rules for Lent being somewhat relaxed to honour the “feeding of the five thousand” story from the Christian Bible.

Internationally, Mothers Day is said to have originated from an ancient Greek festival to Cybele, a mother of Greek gods. This festival took place at the time of the Vernal Equinox in Asia Minor and from the 15th to 18th March upon reaching Rome. The Romans also held a second holiday, Matronalia, dedicated to Juno, where gifts were usually given to mothers.

Whilst we cannot be 100% certain where the idea of Mothering Sunday began, we do know that about four hundred years ago in the UK, people would make a point of attending the largest of their local churches, the “mother church”.

We now refer to the “Mother Church” as a cathedral, the largest of all churches in an area. People who had visited the “mother church” were said to have attended “a Mothering”.

Mothering Sunday was the only day young British boys and girls who were in service (maids and servants), were allowed to visit their families. It would be quite common for the house cook to bake a cake for them to take home to their mothers, sometimes along with a gift of eggs or flowers.

Flowers became a more traditional gift over time as youngsters would gather them from the meadows as they walked home to see their families.

Whilst the commercialisation of Mothers day is ripe in modern times, many English churches still recognise the historical sense, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, along with the traditional concept ‘Mother Church’.

History Of Mother’s Day

The history of Mother’s Day is quite old and the earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600′s, the early Christians in England celebrated a day to honor Mary, the mother of Christ. Later on in UK, Mothers Day celebrations started by the name of Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday came to be celebrated following the practice in UK of 17th century where children from struggling families were send to work as apprentice and domestic servants with the rich. These children were allowed to visit their ‘Mother Church’ or the Cathedral of their home town annually in the middle of the fasting month. Children met their mothers after visiting the church and presented them with flowers and special cakes . Thus it was a kind of Mothers day for them.

In US the roots of the Mothers Day celebration were in the words of Julia Ward Howe. In 1872, she expresses the view of celebrating a special day for mothers. This was done through her prolific writings. Soon the fervor started growing strength and every body demanded declaration of official holiday and celebrations on Mothers Day. Her idea gained popularity but she could not get the idea implemented. Later on, after her death another activist Anne Jarvis worked hard to give all mothers their due recognition and it paid off. Mother’s Day was celebrated in almost every state in the Union. On May 8, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. From then on Mother’s day has been celebrated every year with a lot of enthusiasm and spirit.

With the passage of time the celebrations of Mothers Day have gone through a massive transformation. Today Mothers day involves everything from giving gifts , writing poems, cutting cakes to showering mothers with boundless love. The festival of Mothers Day is based on the emotions shared between mother and a child. As grown ups it’s our turn to thank that special lady with the best that we can.

Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in many countries of the world. This Mother’s Day date was declared by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. The US tradition of celebrating Mothers Day and paying tribute to mothers soon started spreading across several countries over the years and these countries too adopted second Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

In India, Mother’s Day 2009 is on May 10, the second Sunday falling in the month of May.

In Sweden People thank their mothers on the last Sunday in the month of May that will be on 31st May in the year 2009.

UK has an exception to follow. In UK, Mothers day is celebrated on the Mothering Sunday which falls in the month of March. The Mothering Sunday is referred as the “Refreshment Day” in the Bible. It is so called because the fasting rule were relaxed amongst the Christian on this Day. Mothers day is celebrated with a lot of merrymaking and excitement on this day in United Kingdom. Mothers Day in Uk will be celebrated on the 22nd of March this year.

Though the celebration dates for Mother’s Day vary in different parts of the world, the language of the heart is same everywhere. Every heart prays for the well being of a Mother. Everyones shares a hug, send gifts and pays tribute to their loving mothers.
