Mother’s Day is a well-known day, celebrated in the honor of mothers. It wasn’t usually celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May until Anna Jarvis made popular the phrase “2nd Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day”. Countries all over the world celebrate Mother’s Day but some on different days and even month. In the years that passed, most people will just present their mother with carnations or roses as Mother’s Day flowers. This came from the tradition started by Anna Jarvis who gave out 500 white carnations at her mother’s church for each mother on the 10th May 1908. The original location where the first Mother’s Day was celebrated is now the International Mother’s Day Shrine and a National Historic Landmark. The custom of giving Mother’s Day flower eventually spread to the whole United States.

The white carnations that Anna Jarvis gave out to mothers were chosen to represent the purity of mothers’ love. The true purpose has been slightly deviated through the years to the custom of wearing carnation pinned on clothing on Mother’s Day. A red carnation symbolizes that the wearer’s mother is still alive while white signifies that the wearer’s mother is no longer alive. Nowadays, commercialization of Mother’s Day celebration as with other celebrations is wide and rampant. Catering to the busy and people who can afford to spend, Mother’s Day gifts are still the traditional flowers but with many additions that will make any mother pleased. In United States alone, American can spend approximately $2.6 billion on flowers. That is way above pampering gifts and greeting cards. This showed that the top gift for mothers is still flowers.

With the availability of internet, easy and cheap communication, sending a Mother’s Day flower has never been easier. Just a quick call from visible advertisement or a click on a link will make possible the delivery of fresh beautiful flowers to the sender’s mother anywhere in the world. When it used to be a gathering of family member on Mother’s Day, now most mothers understand enough if their busy children don’t come home on Mother’s Day. There are after all contented with the eCards, and of course, the Mother’s Day flowers sent online.

What would life be without mothers? They’re everything in our lives – as friends, mentors, critics, nurses, teachers… In the endless roles that mothers play so that we can feel safe, secure, and loved.

Do you know how Mother’s Day began? It has nothing to do with candies, roses or all that “stuff” that we think of when we think of Mother’s day. You’ll be surprised to know that it started with the need for sanitation. Here’s how it happened….

It all started way back in 1858 in a small town called Webster in West Virginia. There was a woman who lived there by the name of Anna Reeves Jarvis who strived to improve sanitary conditions in the town by forming Mothers’ Day Work Clubs. The Clubs raised money to buy medicine and to hire help for mothers with TB (Tuberculosis), and inspected bottled milk and food.

During the Civil War she extended the purpose of the Mothers’ Day Work Club to continuing her work for improved sanitary conditions for both sides of the conflict as well as actually treating the wounded. This somehow led to the reconciliation of several family members divided by the war, and she is credited with saving thousands of lives because of her teachings about sanitation.

The daughter of that woman, Anna Jarvis, swore at her mother’s grave in 1905 to dedicate her life to her mother’s project and to work for the establishment of Mother’s Day. True to her word, she quit her job and dedicated herself full-time to campaigning for this special occasion we now observe.

On May 10th, in 1907, the church of Grafton, West Virginia became the shrine of the first unofficial Mother’s Day.

Her hard work finally paid off in 1914 as President Woodrow signed the resolution that officially established Mother’s Day in the United States.

Ironically – in light of modern celebrations of Mother’s Day – as the years passed by Ms. Jarvis became disappointed with the increasing commercialization of the holiday. She even frowned on the practice of sending greeting cards and flowers, and later became critical of many public figures that were associated with the celebration of Mother’s Day.

Anna Jarvis died in 1948 with no children of her own and was buried beside her beloved mother.

Similarly, another woman by the name of Julia Ward Howe who was also involved in the Civil War influenced the celebration of Mother’s Day. Ms. Howe was known best for being the author of the words to the “Battle Hymn to the Republic”.

She was so appalled by the carnage of the Civil War and the Franco-Prussian War that she tried to issue a manifesto for peace at an international conference. In 1872, she began promoting the idea of a “Mother’s Day for Peace”. A year later mothers from 18 cities across America held a Mother’s Day for Peace Gathering. Some cities like Boston even continued to celebrate for many years, but the celebrations slowly died out once Howe was no longer paying for the costs.

It’s amazing to think that one woman – Anna Reeves Jarvis – whose simple goal of improved sanitation was able to build such a powerful bridge that she continues to connect people with different beliefs even today.

Modernly, Mother’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world including Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Philippines, and Belgium. In fact more than 40 countries officially celebrate a Mother’s Day.

No matter who we are, how we grew up, or where we live, looking back at that time in our lives when we were still fragile, naive and curious, for most of us it was – and continues to be – our mother who safely guided us on our journey of life.

Our deepest secrets, hurts, fears, and aspirations are all still kept in her locket of memories, and in ours. She nurtured our pain as hers; sometimes sacrificing the things she would have like to have bought for herself just to be able to buy us our latest whim.

However Mother’s Day is celebrated, we just have to keep in mind that it’s not the things we buy for her that matters, it’s the counting of our blessings, the appreciation of the love in our loves, and the opportunity to create a truly memorable Mother’s Day this year – both for yourself – and for those special people in your life.

Mothers Day is on the second Sunday of May. For 2009, Mother’s Day will be on May 10th. This article informs the origin of Mother’s Day, and provides some suggestions for selecting the perfect gift for mom.

Mothers Day in the United States was proposed by Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948). Her mother, Mrs. Anna Reese Jarvis was a minister’s daughter and taught Sunday School for 20 years in the Andrews Methodist Church of Grafton, West Virginia. The younger Anna Jarvis was only twelve years old when she listened to her mother’s wish during a Sunday school lesson on mothers in the Bible, that one day someone would found a memorial mother’s day. There were many days of observance for men, but none for women. Two years after Anna Reese Jarvis died in May of 1905, Anna Jarvis and her friends began a letter-writing campaign to gain support in declaring a national Mother’s Day holiday. She felt children often neglected to appreciate their mother while the mother was still alive. She hoped Mother’s Day would increase respect for parents and strengthen family bonds. On May 8, 1914, the Congress designated the second Sunday in May as Mothers Day. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mothers Day as an official national holiday.

Mothers Day has been observed annually thereafter. There are so many ways you can show your love to your mom. Sending mom a gift on her special day is a great way to let her know how much you appreciate her unconditionallove. There are many Mothers Day gifts to choose from. Among the popular gifts are Mothers Day gift baskets, breakfast basket, red roses, coffee gift basket, gardening or spa gift.

A great way to show your appreciation to mom is to send her a Mothers Day gift basket. These baskets usually come with either a book of loving stories about mothers, or a music CD featuring a beautiful song about mother’s love, along with delicious treats, votive candles, and picture frames. Some contain matching ceramic tea pot and mugs and other keepsakes for mom. Your message of love and gratitude will be clearly delivered. You can also send red roses, either by themselves, or along with the gift basket. These stunning rose bouquets are all time favorites for Mothers Day.

To start your moms special day right, send her a breakfast basket. This beautiful cloth-lined breakfast basket is filled with fantastic bread and muffins, and other breakfast favorites. It is a sure way to get her day start off right. Alternatively, you can send her a basket of delicious muffins in 8 different flavors. Both gifts are tasty way to start her day. The muffins are available specifically as gifts for grandma too.

If your mom is an avid gardener, you may want to send her a gardening gift. Filled with gardening tools, floral gloves, gardening knee pad, a variety of flower seed packets for planting, and delicious treats, it is a great gift to let her know that you have not forgotten about her. If your mom’s hobby is in golf, you can send her a women’s golf gift. She will be happy to receive this basket filled with lady’s golf balls, putting cup, a book of wisdom for golfers, and gourmet snacks.

Alternatively, spa gift basket is a great choice to help mom to relax and rejuvenate. You can pamper mom with spa gift baskets filled with bath and body lotions, gels, bath salts, aromatherapy potpourri, terrycloth slippers and bath pillows, and chocolates. Some come with yoga instruction book and CD, others come with picture frame, candles, and a wall plaque that proclaims “Mothers Made The Best Friends”. There are also pedicure gift with all mom would need to pamper her feet, and a gift with microwavable cotton bootie and lotions to warm and massage her tired feet.

Finally, coffee break gift baskets are great gifts to say relax and enjoy. While you may not be able to give mom a hand with her chores, you can give her a relaxing break. Let mom knows she deserves a break with a coffee gift basket filled with chocolates, gourmet coffee, and scrumptious treats. If your mom is a tea lover, you can send her a tea gift basket instead. You can also send her a dozen of cookies and brownies that she can share with family and friends.

In conclusion, there are so many ways to show your appreciation to mom. You can send her Mother’s Day gift baskets, breakfast baskets, gardening gift, spa gift, red roses, and coffee gift basket. She will love any of these gifts, and your message of gratitude.
